A little girl stares out
A window streaked with rain.
Uncertainty shows on her face;
Her eyes are filled with pain.

Her best friend lies crying
In pain she can't describe.
Is it worth trying to save her?
Or shall she take a loved ones life.

Selfishly she wants to hold on tight
And never let her friend go.
But deep inside she knows whats right
For different reasons still unknown.

Gently she lifts her friend up
And sets her softly in the car
This may be her longest drive
Though the hospital isn't far.

Talking cheerfully to her champion
She gently strokes her head
And talks of how she'll feel better
And of the brighter days up ahead.

Carrying her slowly down a hallway
She speaks of days gone by
Setting her friend down on a table
She fights hard not to cry.

Holding her paw, stroking her head
She looks into trusting eyes of blue
Kisses her Husky softly on the nose
And whispers I love you.

Just a quick prick with a needle
The vet is done and quietly leaves
She hugs her friend tightly
Watching her drift into an endless sleep.

Knowing she'll hurt no more
Doesn't ease the ache inside
Letting her tears fall free
She says a final goodbye.

MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU,
MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK
MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE
THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS
AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN,
MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND

Irish Blessing

You have captured the element of love between human being and animal so well in this poem. Your writing is fabulous and very touching. Brought tears to my eyes just imagining what this situation must feel like. I've given away pet's which is also hard, but I don't think quite as hard as saying that final goodbye.

This is truly an expression of love for your dog.  I have gone through this terrible experience so many times, as I have housed 12 cats and 3 dogs at one time.  I have deeply loved each one and when the time comes to make this decision it is truly a painful one.  We must be glad for the suffering we are eliminating from a precious life.  This brought tears to my eyes and reminded me of past experiences and future ones ahead.  BEAUTIFUL.

I'm sorry Angel. Jewel is without pain now.
