Riding the Fence _______________ The more I think about it, the more I find that I am in between two realms. I don't quit fit into either. In one realm, there is complete narcisism. In the other, complete selflessness. The narcisism seems to fill many people...complete obsession with "self." Those who love themselves so much that they become cold, callous and rude. These things disgust me. The disgust stems from jealousy...from my conception of the narcisists and my idea that I would be shunned by that group. Selflessness I speak of in a particular form...selflessness in the form of complete devotion to a cause. Embodying yourself with a cause for some worldly injustice will, nine times out of ten, insinuate that my method of living life should be altered at a fundamental level. These things nauseate me. I suppose they make me feel ill because they raise questions about my entire existence and usually say my primary way of living is wrong. I hope to find a comfortable balance between both realms. At times I feel completely self-involved. At times I feel sympathetic to world needs. However, at no time do I have enough confidence to cause people to loath their own bodies, nor do I have enough zeal to force-feed my opinions and beliefs to people. It may seem small or parochial, but my personal tragedies are typically my primary importance. I can't say that I have the world's needs as the first objective in my daily life. In that, I exhibit parts of narcisism. My balance comes, however, in little efforts I make to make people conscious of problems or issues in the world. I believe this is all anyone can ask of me. I live my life for me. That statement may seem completely filled with self-conceit. The key here is that "me" is a part of the larger whole that makes up the world. Through that it seems that ensuring my own well-being will help ensure a better world. Everyday, I find something from either side to help balance me on the fence. |

I'm not sure that it is either poetry or prose...I just started writing it...I suppose it's more of an essay. |

i'm gonna hark on previous statements here, but this was definately prose, it was great expression of ideas, it just wasn't poetry....try inverting sentences, changing things, and throwing in some line breaks and you could have abeautiful poem going rich-pa "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose..." -janis joplin |
