He burst in with his sword held high ‘William Smith you’re going to die’ The haunted man just flew into the room He had done the dirty deed Vengeance now had set its seed Big Bill Smith was heading for his tomb William Smith put down his drink And before you’re staring eyes could blink Drew his trusty weapon from its thong Span quickly ‘round and in a flash Drew from him a blood red gash You could feel the seeping… of its song The Tavern pub was packed that night That these two men had had their fight It’s recited now in local history But what that fight was all about The answer still is cloaked in doubt The reason is an unsolved mystery Big Bill Smith and Jack O’Night Were circling now prepared to fight They coldly glared into each other’s eyes With clenching hands that firmly gripped Through the air their swords were whipped And when connected curdling were their cries Bessie Bright had watched them fight Sitting on a stool that night She was working at the Inn behind the bar Bessie had known both the men She’d often brought them comfort when On that night theirs was ….a fallen star Jack O’Night had owned some land A manor house and stables grand He had for years brewed the local mead And late one night he’d felt at threat The papers from his safe did get And just for safety gave the girl the deed Jack O’Night brought William down Wrestling now upon the ground His rapier blade pressed firm against his throat Big Bill then reached out his hand And sent him to the Promised Land With a dagger hidden deep within his coat Jack was pole axed where he stood As from the wound his life did flood His body now was weighty but with lead And as he swam in heavens moat The rapier still at Big Bills Throat Did it’s job and killed big William dead Those gathered there reeled back in shock But someone heard the door unlock And this is where the mystery takes its course A dainty figure dressed in white Rode off into the ink black night Astride the back of Big Bills stallion horse The tavern called The Dog And Duck Is where these men ran out of luck? And on the wall there hangs a shiny plaque And when the winter’s nights are cold This story now is always told And two rusty swords are pulled out from a sack Where’s the mystery? I hear you say It was the one who rode away And to this theory I know I must concede But was it for the love of her That Jack O’Night became a Kerr Or was it for the losing of that …deed ? Jon Mewett. I'm in the studio at the moment so not enough computer time.I can't read as much of your peoples stuff as I'd like. Sorry but I will get 'round. As always Jon, I was enthralled with the story and enraptured by the words. Good one. May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out. Irish proverb. |

I was captivated throughout the entire work of art, Jon.. Beautiful.. MAY THE ROAD RISE TO MEET YOU, MAY THE WIND BE ALWAYS AT YOUR BACK MAY THE SUN SHINE UPON YOUR FACE THE RAINS FALL SOFT UPON YOUR FIELDS AND, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND Irish Blessing |

Perhaps he had lost the deed in some sort of bet with Bill, and had been betrayed by the girl. Perhaps the dainty figure wasn't the same person. You can never tell Jon |
