near the highlands of Scotland 'neath an oppresive sky warriors gathered together their cries whipped by the ferocious gale so fitting for this battle day not far from the clansmen stood a flame haired lass eyes bright with unshed tears a scrap of tartan in her hand and pressing it to her lips then holding it high she raised her own battle cry he ne'er heard her call for the winds stole it away but he heard her heart and rode his steed near to slip down off his mount and crush her to him his hands sliding up to tangle in her wind tossed hair he whispered hoarsely against her cheek 'I refuse to say goodbye to thee Emma' her breath caught as the plea she almost left unspoken fell from her lips in broken tones 'Don't leave me here William! Please stay for our marriage day fast approaches.' abruptly he set her from him and mounting his steed rode hard away for the longing in his heart rose high and wild leaving him almost powerless to deny his love her want in his heart he knew he would ne'er hold her close, or breathe her scent again and it was more than he could stand urging his mount harder he charged recklessly ahead into battle leaving her standing alone on the edge of the great meadow skirts swirling in the cold spring winds his name haunting the breezes an agonized sob tore from her lips as she fell to the soft grass for in her plea was a precious secret one she had left unspoken as of yet his babe, even now grew in her belly as restless and untamed as his sire time stole away many peaceful years until the babe was almost grown to a man when one day approaching his Mum he bent near to brush her cheek with a kiss and through eyes dim with tears she gazed upon him, seeing his father her one true love standing there and she spoke of his father for the first time told of his bravery that day in battle told of his love and kindness to all things gentle and weak and with his father's certain smile her son brushed the graying hair back from her temples pulled her close and promised her he'd not leave the same way "Our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything." --William Shakespeare |
