The people stood along the street The cortege they were there to meet Made its slow and final journey to the crowd The tears now flowing for the gone Were running there as if from one And the one lone bell was tolling.oh so loud The parade arrived with its sad load A silence fell then on the road The family were hung in weeping tears The one who’d passed was ripe and young In the village choir he’d sung In the factory he’d spent his working years The family stepped from the carriage then I was about to make my exit… when I saw the small girl grip the mother’s hand She was so small and starry eyed I looked, I choked I almost cried As around her arm I saw the thick black band To the mothers thoughts I turned my mind As her misty eyes with tears were blind As she clutched the small Childs needing in return It was to me such a nagging thing To hear that lone… that one bell. …Ring How I wished this sadness I could burn I followed them... up to the ground And he was lowered without a sound The little girl so tiny and so small She looked around with questioned stare Her presence was minutely…. there The people around were oh so big so tall Her sweet round face was full of cheer Her sparkling eyes were deep and clear I could see that she didn’t..… understand But then she looked up to the sky And I saw a tear slip from her eye And she grasped once more the weeping mothers hand The sadness hung there like a cloak In deafening silence.. no one spoke And the little girl her thoughts were oh so kind ‘Stop your crying mummy dear Here’s my ribbon wipe your tear And I know daddy…...daddy he won’t mind Jon Mewett [This message has been edited by Jon Mewett (edited 03-22-2000).] |

Well written...a very touching poem Its strange isnt it how one single sound..or sighht..or smell..can evoke a whole range of sensations by reminding us of an event in our lives... thats what the sound of the bell tolling in your poem does for me Tess "What is a friend? Once again Jon this was great. I agree with the others too, you probably be great at prose, short-fiction or something like that. You seem to be full of stories. I enjoyed this one very much. "Be yourself... No matter what they say" - Sting |

Yes -Thanks everybody. I may give your ideas a go,but it's the rhyme that I relly enjoy, that's the magic in narrative verse for me,and to think somebody enjoys these efforts,I can't tell you. It's something else. Jon [This message has been edited by Jon Mewett (edited 03-23-2000).] |

Excellent Jon. The story was so vivid and poignant that I wanted to cry. As usual you did a beautiful job of captivating the reader. ...Give me the strength to walk the soft earth, a relative to all that is.... Black Eagle Oglala Sioux holy man |

Wow!! This is enough to make a grown man weep. I nearly did. I wanted to get in there and hold that woman and child. Phew! Thank you. |
