Inside a cave I dared explore, I found strange bones upon the floor. Some handprints on the walls of stone Were not much different than my own. I held my breath so I could see If anyone was there, but me. I listened and heard water drip. It fell from a stalactite's lip. But were there whispers in the dark And did I see a sudden spark? Did people who have passed this way Impress their footsteps in the clay? I want to look, but somehow know, It's better if I turn and go And maybe in some distant year, A braver soul will venture here. They'll see the things I have today And then decide that they will stray Inside wide chasms; caverns deep, Where ancient secrets lie asleep. I love that sense of being in the presence of something sacred. Where i used to live there are authentic native american paintings on the walls of a certain box canyon that is always hard to find no matter how many times you have been there. I often thought that not to be coincidence. One's not half two it's two are halves of one EE Cummings |

It has the feel of an "Indiana Jones" movie minus the snakes..Let's go exploring shall we? [This message has been edited by Songbird (edited 05-09-2001).] |

Red_Feather: Thanks for commenting. I know what you mean. It felt like I was trespassing and I suppose I was. This was a cave in Nevada mountains. I know many people have been there since I was and did find Indian artifacts. Betty Lou Hebert |

Dear Joyce: Thank you! I was too chicken to really go into the cave beyond the entrance and as I told Red_Feather, it felt like trespassing. Betty Lou Hebert |
