We've had our little clash of wills, Your determination won the day. You'll build your nest above my door. My guests will enter another way. You do not scold like other birds. You just come back again and again. I have not the heart to tear it down, Your home will stay. You win. You win. With admiration, I am glad, You chose to build your nest so near. I'll watch your little family grow, Remembering I once had one to rear. Swiftly back and forth, with food, So diligently, you and your mate. You lovingly provide their needs, But to try their wings, they cannot wait. I remember well the pride and pain, Knowing each step my childen took Would bring me closer to the day, I'd be alone in my little nook. So tend them now and love them well, The day will come, as you well know, They'll try their wings, and find them strong, And without a thought, will fly and go. I'll miss you all when you go away, I'll watch with pride, as away you soar. Next spring, come back to the little nest, Built so carefully above my door. Very nice Joyce. I love bird watching and this poem reminded me of a nest built by sparrows near my back door. I felt a bit responsible and somewhat like a proud father (or grandpa) when the newbies began chirping. Great job! Mike |

is this the same swallow that built it's nest in your doorway last year, the one you wrote about before? If only it knew it was the object of such wonderful poetry! great read. thanks, joyce. |

Joyce: I loved this poem! We had a swallow build a nest in my clothespin basket, which I had hung in the carport for the winter. So, can really relate to the experience you are having with yours. Betty Lou Hebert |

Thanks everyone for yor comments. Dream Child. I just checked my postings before I put this in and I had never written about my swallow before, but I had posted one about a robin in my apple tree. I do have a sequel to this one called Swallow No. 2. Because she came back to the nest again for the second time in the same season. thanks for reading. I have one I think I will put in the main site, if I haven't done it before. I'll check it out first. this is about birds in general. The heart of a mother on show for all to see. Beautiful. May your roof never fall in and those beneath it never fall out. |
