Wild wings beating frantically
Was what drew my eye to thee.
Fighting with the windowpane
For your freedom, all in vain.
It's my fault you're where you are.
Outside door, I left ajar.
I must help you to attain
What you long for, once again.

With hands spread, I reach your side.
Try to guide your flight inside.
Somehow you just seem to know
I intend to help you go
Back into the open air,
So you quickly settle there.
Watch me with a curious eye
Till I set you free to fly.

Such impressions left behind.
Pictures of you flood my mind.
Gorgeous feathers and so small,
I didn't feel your weight at all.
Tiny claws are like thin wire.
Your gorget, a flashing fire.
I'm sorry for your fright and yet,
Just so delighted that we met!

Betty Lou Hebert

(I found a Rufous Hummingbird on the patio yesterday and was able to catch it and set it free. A memorable experience!)

I loved this Betty.  This happened to me once, only I had the help of my kitty and that really made it tough, but I saved it from her and it flew away.  I don't know if that particular one ever came back to my feeder.  Joyce

Betty Lou,
This is an exquisite description  - I could feel the bird in my hand!
Realistic and delicate....very nicely woven indeed!

Thanks Joyce.  Last year my husband rescued a baby flicker that fell while learning to fly.  It happened in our back yard and the parents were just frantic.  Of course one of our cats headed straight for it, but Will managed to get their first.  He picked it up and put it up on a high branch.  The parents came swooping in and coaxed it into flying again.  They only went a short distance and left their baby in a snag.  They came back and flew around and around our back yard, singing their peculiar song.  We are convinced they were saying "thank you'!
