While we were gone, the bears came in.
Our camp, we'd left neat as a pin,
But now it was an awful mess.
They thought we'd leave some food I guess.
We tidied up and then we saw
They'd left behind the print of paw
Upon the tablecloth as well.
Before we had a chance to dwell
Upon the rudeness of this act,
We had to face the scary fact
That bears were loitering around
And one, without the slightest sound,
Had come to stand just feet away.
It cast a pall upon our day.
We scared him off, but darkness came
And "scaring us" became their game!
The bears were in our camp all night.
They prowled and growled and had a fight.
They sniffed the tents.  The canvas wall
Did not feel so secure at all.
We couldn't sleep and couldn't wait
For dawn which seemed to be quite late!
We packed our gear and turned our face
Back to the city and a place
Where bears are found just when you look
At pictures in a children's book!

Dear Joyce:  This really was a frightening experience.  The bears were not really afraid of us at all and pretty much determined they were going to do as they pleased.  We let them!

Bob:  Thanks for reading and commenting. This trip cured us all of tent camping!  We all have small trailers now!

this piece is simply delightful and a bit scary at the same time. excellent flow to the rhyme.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
