The milk-house on the farm was made
from common fieldstone, carefully laid,
to form four thick and sturdy sides.
A heavy, wooden door that slides,
reveals a cool and shadowed space.
High benches built around the place,
hold shallow pans, their sides a-gleam,
where milk was poured, to set the cream.
It always rose so thick and sweet.
On anything, it was a treat.
With bowl and spoon, I used to skim
and fill it to the very brim.
For every suppertime, you'd see
that something needed cream to be
a perfect ending to the meal.
How satisfied it made us feel
and some of it was churned to make
golden butter and we would take,
the fancy molds and pack them so
unique designs, on top would show.
It was a special spot for me.
Remains the same, in memory.

Betty Lou - you have brought back so many memories!
I can remember skimming that cream....and when poured on fresh strawberries - heavenly!
Never worried about 'pasteurizing' the milk...
although ironically, I remember the taste of the milk would change when the alfalfa season arrived...no worries about cholesterol then, either...
Golly, thanks for this wonderful trip, and so smoothly designed...it just ripples along!

Very good read, Betty.

And the work of removing that milk,
waits on no man,
or woman, as the case may be.

Thanks.

Very good Betty.  And I remember having to wash all of the little slimy disks in the separator. My most unfavorite job of all.

Lary:  Thanks for commenting.  I guess most people who lived on farms, years ago, will relate to this memory.  I can taste those strawberries and cream to this day.

coyote:  I was very young at the time of this memory and I took my cream-skimming duties most seriously.  I always saved the last spoonful for me!

Joyce:  I never had to wash the separator parts.  The milk-house was used prior to the time my uncle bought the separator and after that I was excused from milk duties, except to drink it!

Lynne:  Thanks for commenting.  I'm sure you have some fond memories of your own to share.
I grew up on a homestead in northern Alberta and also spent part of each year on an uncle's farm.  Many years ago now.
