Alike and Different

When I was young, so many years ago,
I dreamed that someday someone I would find.
We'd match in every way, and he would know
The thoughts and feelings of my heart and mind.
He'd be like me in almost every way,
No conflict there of background, race or creed.
The things I'd want I would not have to say.
He could anticipate my slightest need.
I thought in time that I had found this man,
So many tastes and feelings we did share.
We tried as hard as anybody can,
But dreams evaporated into air.
Heartbroken tears I subsequently spilt.
Illusory the castle that I built.

No longer young, I have a different dream
Of one whose life's not been the same as mine.
As unalike as he and I may seem,
What is inside is very much in line.
The home he loves is half a world from here,
His skin and hair and eyes a darker shade,
Unknown to me the customs he holds dear.
I have not shared the journey he has made.
But in our love of God we are akin,
Although it is by varied names we praise,
And spirit touching spirit, deep within,
We climb a single mount by different ways.
Though outwardly it seems we walk apart,
We're joined by similarities of heart.

I think your signature quote is a fitting comment for this piece, Marilyn.
"To love another person, is to see the face of God."
This work has great form & feeling.
Thanks.

Dear marilyn; How blessed you are to have found such a love, and blessed with the gift of poetry, to write so beautifully of your hearts desire...exquisitely!  Love, Ellie

This was so lovely to read, amazing how our critera (wants, needs, desires) can change with age/wisdom.  A wonderful read.

Coyote - Thanks for that observation about my signature quote.   I do believe it's true. Thanks also for the kind comments on the poem itself. I've been doing a lot of sonnets lately, but the form didn't seem long enough for this one, so we have a double sonnet, instead.

Joyce - Thank you. I wish the same for you.

Ellie -   What can I say? This wouldn't have been written at all without your challenge. Thanks for the idea, and for always being so warm and supportive. hugs

Wordancer - Yes, it certainly is interesting how our ideas about life and love can change. I have the age thing down.  Now I'm waiting for the wisdom.   Thanks for stopping by.

Gloria, my friend - You, who write so much from the heart, can always read mine. Thanks for the wishes, and you know how many I send back to you.

Betty - Thank you. It means a lot to me to know you enjoyed it.

Marilyn, wonderful job on this one.
I truly enjoyed this and knew the story behind it. Very nice.

Marilyn -
This is so touching - such a poignant look at the dream, the loss, the recovery...and having the wisdom to concentrate on what truly matters!
Love it!

Lary - Hey, I've missed you!  Nice to see you back. And thanks for the comments.

Red Feather - Thank.  The wisdom, such as it is, came with a price, as all wisdom does.
