Smudge on wrinkled paper,
tiny fingers gripping wood;
pencilled lines erased, repeated,
won't go where they should.
Small mouth scrunched, awaiting
judgment, eyelids seeping wet.
A child in search of dignity -
but doesn't know it yet.

Saunter of defiance,
clothes askew in rumpled quirk;
vagueness hides direction,
shelters aptitude for work.
Arrogance pretending
there is nothing more to know.
A youth in search of dignity -
but cannot let it show.

Chained to tight agenda,
not a minute free to waste;
posturing and bowing,
learning artificial taste.
Elevator crowded;
make adjustment for the sway.
A life in search of dignity -
but losing it each day.

Smudge on wrinkled paper,
fingers falter in their grasp;
identity relinquished
in the struggle for each gasp.
Remnant worn and sagging,
crying silently for peace.
A soul in search of dignity -
mortality's release.

Wow!!! You have left me speechless with this one, Lary. (Well, almost ) The portraits are so vividly painted, especially the one of the small child, that I could see each of the people you spoke of, and I do like the way you bring this around full circle, not unlike Shakespeare's ages of man. Guess I found a few words after all. Nice work!

To love another person is to see the face of God.

You have captured the essence of the mind of a child, ever learning about life.
I wonder if you are a school teacher???
I must say, well done!

Beautifully writ, Lary! I like the search, the expanse of time, the mundane/silliness that is the course of life in search of dignity! The scheme was great and flowed so nicely! Great one!

i will often reply by saying "hi, i especially liked your _____ verse or the last _____ lines"

i can't reply in the usual manner for this one because there are just so many lines that i like...

i enjoyed the way you combined your words...interesting...

Samantha - I'm glad you liked it, and hope it's not too convoluted!

Marilyn - golly, you have some nice things to say! I had wondered whether the repetition of the smudge on paper would work, but I guess it does....
Thanks !

Well, Deb, never been a school teacher, but have lots of kids and grandkids!
Thank you!

Bob, those are heartwarming comments...really makes my day! I'm sure glad it came across okay...Thanks a bundle!

Moon Dust - thanks for stopping in!

kaile - so nice to meet you! (At least I don't remember meeting you before, heh heh - can't be sure of my memory though) I don't get around much, just hang out at the Pub when I can grab a few moments.
Sure do appreciate your comments!

Thanks so much, everyone!
Lary
