ANOTHER CLOSE CALL The old cowboy was sitting, just watching the flame, Face lined, it showed the years of work and strain. He was tired, wore out, hell, he'd been up since four, His eyes closed and he let his thought drift and soar. Back to the days when he was young, and full of fire, He could go day and night, and never tire. Ready to fight, and, or love, he didn't care. The world was here, and he was going to get his share. The campfire popped, things begin to get worse, Soon he came back to now, and yelled out a curse. He jumped to his feet, began slapping at the fire and smoke, He stumbled over his coffee, got tangled in a rope. There was so much grease in those old levis, That the flames had spread, all the way to his thighs. He was beginning to hurt, and starting to worry, What if he burned up, all alone, out here on the prarie? He began to panic, his face was wet with sweat, What a way to go, and me not out of my prime yet. There were things that he had planned to try, They didn't include a do it your self body fry. But for now, relief was all that was on his mind, Never, ever, had he got his self into such a bind. He finally got the fire out, and Lord he did hurt, Looking down, he thought, sure am glad the jewels didn't get burnt. |

Great job on this, Bill! Too bad the cowboy's jeans caught on fire...(another reason dragons don't wear jeans) Keep up the great work! Little Spyro T. Dragon |

Bill were you a cowboy at one time? You're poems are so descriptive I feel as though I'm participating. As always, excellent poem! |

Yes Kim, I grew up around horses, cows the whole bit, I worked for other people on ranches some, enough to know I didn't like it, an old range cow is about the stupidst creature god put on this earth, My dad and two brothers were cowboys big time, me, I drifted into sports and then the Marine Corps. bill |

Bill, This is great. It made me laugh and I really enjoyed it. Your work is so descriptive. I've always had and interest in the old west and this put me in mind of that. Looking forward to more of your poems. Sheila |
