The air is hot, sulfuric,
whirling like a cloud of locusts on demonic wings
and I know that somebody wrenched open the
gate to Hades again.
There it is!  A deafening bellow
like that of an enraged dragon
rising from a distant stygian pit.
Perhaps a flood of cimmerians have escaped,
desperate, wild-eyed,
frantically dragging their eternal chains across the sky.
I hear them,
gasping in the acrid air,
pounding,
hammering at the doors of heaven.
My walls tremble and shake,
as if over my roof,
two hundred million horseman
are in thunderous pursuit.
With every furious crack of their whips
my room is lit in a brilliant flash of hyacinth blue,
and I envision lion teeth
long, fiery red hair,
serpentine, under a crown of gold.
There is an echo of shrill cries,
like legions of lost souls,
who plead for mercy
as they lay forgotten
on the steps of the elysium temple.
Darkness is moving in,
and I hear hopeless weeping,
a torrent of bitter tears,
splattering against my window,
and I imagine enslaved spirits
lingering in the shadows,
seeking a death
that they can never have.

deliciously dark..extremely well written piece of gothic chaos...loved it!!

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Pegasus111,
Thank-you for your kind comments on my poem.
yes, it is dark. A storm can make my mind wander in strange directions sometimes...
I had fun with this!

What a way to describe the weather...Exactly what I must've thought as a small child huddled up in my room as a furious storm rages outside.  Spooky!

Debbie~
What imagery ... wonderfully done.

'With every furious crack of their whips
my room is lit in a brilliant flash of hyacinth blue,'

EXACTLY the right shade of blue !
Enjoyed this one so much.
I love the muses the thunder shakes out of hiding !

Wow, this is really different, and the imagery is superb!  You got my attention!

Wobbly-Head-Bob,
(I feel like I could write a poem about your name! LOL)
Thanks for your comment! The storms around here are scary sometimes!  Lots of noise and lightening to fuel the imagination!

Thank-you Marge,
I tried to do a little research on this, I was afraid that some of the words were a little out there... but they seemed to fit!

Thanks Marilyn,
I'm glad you liked it!
