I came by on a winter’s night;
     saw you sitting there in
     the window by candlelight.
You were writing a letter, to whom, I don’t know,
     but you looked so engrossed in what you were doing,
     I didn’t want to disturb your thought, so
     I thought I’d better go;
     then stop by later, if only for a little while.

When I came back, I saw you were gone,
     but the letter was still there, sitting on
                                               the desk.

I couldn’t help but look, and saw it was a note that read,
     "I’ll be back in a little while, I’ve gone to get some milk and bread."
Then I remembered you calling me at work,
     asking if I’d stop by the store on my way home.
                                                                …doh!

So, I quickly left before you returned;
     went to the store to get some milk and bread,
     in hope of returning before you,
     but who should I run into, but you!
So being the quick thinker that I am, I said,
     "What? Did you think I’d forget?"

You asked me, "Did you eat yet or
     should we pick up something for supper while we’re at the store?"
I said, "I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before."

We left the store together, but you made it home before
                                                                            me,
     and waiting at the door,
     holding the note you wrote, waving it in my face,
     you said, "How did this jelly get on the note? …Hmmm?"

…doh!

----
I wasn't sure whether to title this "I Came by on a Winter's Night" or "Milk and Bread" or maybe "doh!" LOL

You tell stories so well, Gene!  I think I like "Milk and Bread", too.

How about "Caught Jelly Handed"! I love the way this tells a sweet story of the everyday occurances of life. Y ou are surely a born storyteller! Ellie

Thanks Everyone,

I enjoyed your title suggestions.

This poem is an example of me and my x-wife. Even when I tried to cover up little mistakes in order to please her, I'd always get caught.
