The wind had a bite, the day was dark and cold,
It was days like this, that he realized he was old.
A coat and sweater, was the order of the day,
It wasn't quite enough to keep it totally at bay.

He hunched his shoulders, made do somehow,
It never completly went away, he could feel it now.
It happened every winter, had for a lot of years,
The cold was still the same, just minus the fears.

He remembered again,  it was like all the others,
The days were the same, the snow , it still covers.
Faces frozen in stillness, disbelief was in the eyes,,
Some of lifes hurt stays there, when a man dies.

Lord will he ever forget? It has been many years,
The ache in his bones, remind him of old fears.
He'd killed him at night, in the midst of a storm,
Not aware all the man wanted, was to get warm.

At dawn he lay there in the snow where he had fell,
He recalled when he shot him, he'd heard him yell.
At the time he didn't notice, if so, he wouldn't care,
For he was glad he came, also glad he was there.

To many friends, family to, had lain as this man lay,
Their faces he will never forget, he sees them each day.
Almost a lifetime has passed, days just seem to vanish.
Life is just a collection of memories, and many a wish.
He often has wondered, would he do it the same,
He knows the answer, that was war, not a game.
He takes the mail from its box, goes back up the drive,
Pulls up his collar against the wind, glad he's alive.

Bill; I am having a difficult time finding words here, because I am so deeply moved by this incredibly written poem and the horror that you carry and still remember so vividly.
You fought for me and us all that we could have freedom and deeply do I thank you for this, but am terribly saddened at the price. Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Ellie, I appreciate your feelings, but please remember this, I came home, the sacrifices were made by those that didn't. I had hardship yes, but I still got to live a life, my worst memory is not of the hardships, but the fact that so many of my friends did not get to live their lives.

These are haunting memories you have shared, Bill, and chilling ones, too.  War is a terrible thing.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

I think you were very brave to go out there and face death. I agree with the others this is a very moving piece and it filled me with emotion.

Life has got to chnage,
Nothing stays the same,
Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.

You leave me with a chill Bill. I'm glad you write about these memories. Not only for you to perhaps "soften" them a bit, but also to remind me of how many died for my freedom today. Thank you.

Well. ^_^ I love the way you have written this.. and I suspect, someone who thinks like thi person, could never grow old.. even if the wind does chill his bones.. no, William, I don't think u will ever forget.. I think it's better that way.. there is less chance it will happen again, if someone remembers what it did to people last time..
