Scruffy and Pinto

There is a Pinto colored tom cat
lives across the street
in a garage with many patches.
His entrance a gap between the doors
his territory fiercely protected
as he basks, guarding his domain.

He is a cat of means, you see
a roof claimed, defended as his own
shelter shared only with occasional female.
Human owners of garage bring food
once we saw enough to last a week
sometimes there is naught; yet he stays.

His nemesis, a street cat we call Scruffy
several social levels beneath
evident by the fellows poor appearance.
This smelly, unwanted interloper
makes several assaults per week
in vain attempt to get inside.

Pinto fights with abandon
protecting what’s his from invasion
no doubt, defending his way of life.
The old ideology; preserve the status quo
can’t lose that which we have achieved
to some unwashed, foreign invader.

Scruffy, for his own purpose
never seems to tire of the assaults
perhaps, simply a case of desperation.
Wanting, envious of Pinto’s “security”
willing to fight for that roof
and the occasional human concern.

Have and the have knots revisited
war of ages in micro-display
yet indicative of ageless struggle.
Are we any different, friend?
Do we not defend what is ours
with the ferocity of the cat next door?

Survival versus security
life and death the struggle remains
escalation and retaliation.
In the end who survives?
Who has security? Who lives, who dies...
when life is reduced to war?

Sometimes we just tie ourselves up in knots, don't we? I don't think humans are very much different, I would have to agree. Great writing, Daniel!

Daniel; This is a wonderfully written analogy of the horror of conflict, and the consequences thereof...Ellie

Very well written and thought out. Makes me think were not much different to animals.

Life has got to chnage,
Nothing stays the same,
Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.
