Ah yes, one of those eternal questions poets never tire of asking themselves...

Self-definition achieved
By what I'm not,
And I'm not you.
The world drips off
My water-proof hide
As I walk down the crowded street,
And I'm the only person I don't see.
Lost in the forest
Of a single tree,
Unable to see the leaves
For the chlorophyll.
A corrugated soul
Biodegrades in a landfill of humanity,
Content to waste away the day.
Who could I have been
If I weren't me?
Into the infinite darkness
I step, flashlight in hand
And a sense of vulnerable
Invicibility in my head.
You can't touch me,
Because I'm not sure if I'm really here.

"If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing."

I like the poem..I think we question our worth and our very existance constantly but, I'm not sure whether I question if I am really here or not..IRS seems to know about me..

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Yeah, this is essentially my Introduction to Philosophical Thought course rearing it's head in my work.  About the only thing the class did for me--aside from get me really interested in philosophy--is to make me doubt myself more and more.  Wonderful, eh?

Searches are eternal, are they not?  Even if we think we've found an answer to a question like this, we're really just seeing a part of it, like using a flashlight to see inside a dark room...you can never see all of the room at once with such a limited beam...such is the human intellect...we can see parts of the big picture, but not all of it at once.

gofor42,
I read this and felt like you were describing me instead of yourself, there are alot of lines in your poem that I can relate to, especially this last stanza!
Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed!

Yeah, like I said--this is one of those questions that poets like to ask themselves, and I guess we're all kind of wandering around in the dark when it comes to really knowing ourselves, despite what Plato wanted from everyone.
