The thing that you offer that I find most rare, The one that assures me you really do care, Doesn't fit in a box, wasn't under the tree. The very best gift that you give me is...me! I suppose that may sound just a little bit strange, But I'm trying to say that you don't rearrange Me, in fact, wouldn't change me in any old way, For it seems that you like me and think I'm okay Just the way that I am. That is such a delight - To know that with you I am really all right! In the past I've had parts of me strewn all around. I'd attempt metamorphoses truly profound 'Cause I thought that in order to please my dear mate I would have to adapt. Yes, I must re-create Myself into a being that satisfied him. My chance of success was so dismally slim That I thought I had failed and became quite depressed, Although all those years I did give it my best. Though I wish I could say that I learned from that time That the person I am should be seen as sublime, The fact is, I was quite a chameleon. I'd try to become what almost anyone Suggested he thought he would like me to be Until you came along and insisted on me! I know that to you it may seem a small thing, But belief in myself is the gift that you bring. In my life what you give me is something so new There are times that I really don't know what to do, For I still can't believe that there is such a man - I mean one who wants me to be me all I can! Now, don't get me wrong, I would change things for you, But that isn't a thing you would ask me to do. So instead I am giving up just one small part Of me. You now possess a large piece of my heart! |
