[This poem is based a a very interesting program I heard on PBS radio-which included ancient rites connected with the Winter Solstice & the lingering traditions connected with some of our end year observances.] Let me take you back in time, To a vision running through my mind A primitive culture of man's line, As we pass through this portal of time. In this vision, I can see, A "Holy Man" of the community In solemn ceremony and state, There to perform his priestly rite. On this on brief special eve, Attired in ceremonial sleeves As for his world, he does his deed, A potion in hand- to fill the need. Of the vial he does ingest, While he, fasting and praying yet This potent mixture fills his head, With hallucinary visions bred. For 'tis at this sacred interval, Days more comsumed with darkness fill The priest will brave the nether world call Hoping, praying for reversal. And should the gods hear intercession, His people's fate, being that in question Then through this rite, visionary and spoken, The power of darkness will once again be broken. The days won't yield to greater darkness, But with renewal, as with the star dust Each day, the light will be stronger, And last each day, a little longer. Thus we have witnessed, by mind extension, A vision of early man's intervention Concerned about their plight and wish, For what we know as Winter's Solstice. Long ago such rites were performed, Which long since died, forgotten, forlorn And though we ne'er approach it that way, Yet we too, desire those longer days! And thus we sense our own connection, With all humanity, through such reflecting Each generation seeking a Brighter day, Yet attempting to achieve it in a better way. < !signature--> To put together words & rhyme--and touch a life--is so sublime! Aye, the things we have believed through the ages...proves that belief in something is a powerful thing! It can motivate you to do certain acts religiously through faith or honor! But, I have a feeling somewhere, in some little corner of the world away from the West and Progress, we find a small circle still performing these rites as an act of eternal faith in their own beliefs. Would make me a little stronger just knowing someone had some these days! I heard some of this NPR program, and it was indeed interesting. You have written a marvelous piece in reaction to it. Thank you!< !signature--> To love another person is to see the face of God. - Les Miserables Marilyn [This message has been edited by kcsgrandma (edited 12-25-2000).] |
