It falls softly, its beauty yet to shine, slowly it will cover all,
I have waited and thought of this day since last fall.
To me it is serenity, laid down for us without cost,
I watch in wonder, as the grey drabness is lost.

The trees are the first to feel the touch of the cool, clean white,
It is always amazing, how much will fall durning the night.
When I awake, and view for the first time the scene,
The land and trees have been transformed, new and pristine.

The limbs of trees are bowed, they seem to say, we submit,
There is no brown grass to be seen, a blanket of beauty now hides it.
Yet within all that beauty, beyond the quiet, there rests a memory,
It brings back a time when the snow and cold, was not kind to you and me.

As I look upon the peacful yards, so quiet and serene,
It is a far cry from Korea, where I froze and suffered as a Marine.
Fifty years, almost a lifetime, yet I can feel it as if it were yesterday,
Cold that cut like a knife, you searched for warmth,
just no way.

This was a cold that held no mercy, no beauty here to see,
As it grew worse each day, you wondered how this could be.
The earth seemed to be saying, this time I will make you pay,
And pay we did, those that lived, feel that terrible cold still today.
For those who fought and died in that bleak and frozen hell,
You are honored and cherished, by we who remember so well.
To fight and possible die, is a risk taken, but no one could see,
How miserable and brutaly cold, a place called Korea could be.

So as I look upon this peacful and beautiful winter scene,
I see in my mind, the frozen face of a young and freckled Marine.
A boy, who became a man in that far off land of sorrow,
When asked what he would most like to have, replied, "give me tomorrow".

for my brothers, who suffered more than I

This seems so sad, yet you portrayed the pain well. I like it

Life has got to chnage,
Nothing stays the same,
Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.

William; Thank you for the selfless gift you gave to fight that we may be free. You suffering was not in vain for those of us who are grateful. Thank you also for this beautifully written reminder of what was sacrificed for this freedom. Ellie

I remember well the cold, William..thanks for the memories, though bitter, they are a part of me still.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
