Why are the cities of the world populated by so many? I’m sitting in this basement block I’m listening to the town hall clock The cardboard that’s around my head Is all I need to make my bed? The walls are closing in on me I know I never will be free My friends I’ve left them all behind I never know just what I’ll find The bells communicate their song The sun it shines but things are wrong The air it smells a stifled reek Happiness is all I seek My childhood pain comes back to haunt Tormenting faces thin and gaunt I’ve forgotten what my life’s about I’m looking for a quick way out Hear my song I sing to you Tell me now what would you do Don’t turn away don’t cast me out Comfort me. …dispel my doubt I know that life’s a long hard path But at my pleas the people laugh I sit here desolate and all alone Please help me find my way back home Jon Mewett |

Jon, A song for the forgotten and ignored, quite a few are veterns to my understanding. It is sad how we are willing to discard the unwanted, the old and the weak. Life is precious and we should honor it everywhere we find it! Good thoughtful read, as we are about to celebrate Thanksgiving, we should be mindful that there are many who don't have much to be thankful for. very heartwrenching Jon...but, all to often true....more people should realize that the homeless are people with feelings, and minds and most of all hearts....just like us. Best |

yeah, we should think more about them, an interesting read. Sometimes you have to let go and move on, But never let go of the memories. |

Jon~ This is a touching read. We need to make the time to see that no one in America goes to bed hungry or cold at night. And of course, not just on special holidays ... but every day and every night. Too often we leave the work to the churches - but we ARE the churches ! Each of us has an obligation to share more than a donation to let some group shoulder the time and effort it takes to help those less fortunate. I would offer this challenge - Don't say, "What did they do ?" Say, "What did I do ?" This is a timely write - and the time is now. Thanks for sharing this. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Jon; Your words paint an all too realistic picture of the reality of the down trodden and forsaken. My prayer...Show us what to do, Lord. Ellie Belief is a truth held in the mind; faith is a fire in the heart. Joseph Fort Newton |

Yes, it's easy to walk by a homeless person on the street and hope that somebody else will take care of them. Thanks for reminding us that we should take notice of those that are crying out for help, and show them that live can be worth living. |

Thanx everybody........first an admission.....I find this time of year quite incongruous.....I used to find it fun ....well I still do.....you know with my family and all that.......but I can't square with all the need and waste....for some its not a happy time nor a happy new year....I find it sought of baffling......some times I'm glad when its all over........say I don't want to bring anyone down.....its just me I guess? Thanx again Jon |

This is a thoughtful piece, and a good reminder, before we get too caught up in the materialism of the season. Thanks for that, Jon. To love another person is to see the face of God. - Les Miserables Marilyn |

jon..this is quite sad...but i know how you feel, talking about this time of year.. i tend to be skeptical these days..even as i try not to judge--but there are so many now who just pretend to be homeless for the easy hand out..and thats a terrible thing.. but to see the eyes light up, and sometimes their tears, when you are able to help someone in that situation....wow..they really seem grateful.. this is a sad poem, but well written jon hugs,dg "so lift your heart with mine...the depth to which it grieves is the height to which it can celebrate!" -Lisa Hussey |

Jon, this reminds me of a book i have read before:the Street Lawyer by John Grisham.in the book, he attempted to bring the world of the homeless to the attention of the reader, just as your poem has done.... that was a good book and yours was a good read and i reckon that you will enjoy that book also thanks |
