This story can be found in the November 2000 issue of the magazine Healthy Scales and Tails, in narrative format. Here it is posted as a poem; hopefully this does not diminish from its integrity. Note: This is likely to be interpreted in many ways; but we hope you enjoy it. --Healthy Scales and Tails Staff A cool evening breeze was gently blowing Through some boy’s window, without him knowing— He was asleep, Dreaming quite deep, His sweet joyful bliss was showing. Enter a portrait on opposite wall, Not quite extraordinary at all. It showed of a dragon, in feminine style, Her wings gently wrapped, her face bore a smile. But all this façade was a stall… As soon as the kid was out for the night, She spread out her wings as if to take flight. Yet deep down she knew She could not go through The paper-thin barrier right. The sleeping small boy just hadn’t a clue That he had a guardian watching him, too! Again, that strong sense of longing returned, Inside her head the thoughts slowly churned. What if this child Saw the dragoness—smiled— Would he believe what he’d learned? She remained motionless throughout the day, Watched her beloved through work and his play. And when he lay down To sleep in his gown She knew things would all be okay. But now… She stooped to the ground, bent there to kneel, Ready to play to some being’s appeal— Silently prayed That she would be made The coveted status of real. * * * Sunrise did come, the little kid rose, Opened his eyes and rubbed on his nose. Then he felt on his face A gentle embrace And saw the real dragon pose. The little kid went down the stairs Ate some oatmeal and some pears— Then noticed something very strange (Other than the dragon’s change)— A sight caught by two stares… On both boy and dragon a fact did dawn Gripping and terrible, facing the lawn. A real note, not fake That said Mom could take No more of her child; She was gone. * * * All this a fit of tears did bring— What a terrible, awful thing! His mom disappeared…! Now all life he feared— Until he felt gently The wrap of a wing around him. It was all real, everything now, He’d suffered a loss—like a heartbreaking POW! But somehow deep down He just could not frown; It all would be fine, somehow. _________ Both dragon and boy found a new home With a nice, caring family, wealthy and known! She and her kid Lived life well amid The fact they’re no longer alone. They had each other…and more. What else could they ask for? _________ Much later on, a great length of time, Much after then was written this rhyme, The dragon already had the wings, She just needed a couple more things— Like a heavenly glow (And a halo) With its own special golden shine. And guess what? A little boy woke up in heaven one day Then was instantly hugged by a dragon ‘that’ way. Little Spyro T. I do enjoy your dragon tales, always something unexpected in them. I have a 14-year-old daughter who loves dragons, and I'm going to start sending these to her. To love another person is to see the face of God. - Les Miserables Marilyn |

Wonderfully delightful story. You and I have a vivid imagination , your dragons and my fairies. Isn't it so fun to write of fantasy and magical beings? Love, ellie Belief is a truth held in the mind; faith is a fire in the heart. Joseph Fort Newton |
