the frozen irony of it all

leaden skies beckons
reigns supreme
as the bitter wind howls across
uncharted territories of a back-blasted land
don’t you know?
that it is the end of the world
as you stand immobile in place
unable to go forward or take that first step
back into a lost moment in time
crystallized snow shattered
dead eyes that no longer weep
damned surely as the first tear is the last
down the corroded path
that stresses hungry hollows

black ice covers broken land
no light but the endless stars
no warmth but tattered rags
plated winding sheets
symbol of the lost
glacial statues trudge
endlessly in one place
as it snows forever
in the long dark night

Honey Bunch, thanks for the read.

Jon, This was inspired by a metal sculpture that I saw on the grounds on the University of Vermont about three years ago. There was several larger than life, stylized figures trudging across a grassy area.  They were clothe in tattered metal rages…with a look of total hopeless and despair on their blank faces.  I could just picture it being an end of the world type of scenario with blowing snow swirling all around.  Apparently I kept that thought in the back of my mind and just recently wrote this….

...and after the fire there will only be the long cold night of despair...
