Love--An Argument Against Empiricism |

Empricism is a belief that we can't have knowledge outside of something we have not experienced through our senses. They hold that our sensory experience is the only truth. As the poem explains (I hope), anyone who believes this has obviously never been in love. You say nothing exists that you Cannot experience through your senses. Such an empirical claim Is proof positive you've never been in love. It is beyond sight, for Love is blind. It is beyond touch, taste, smell, or Sound. Love confounds them all, Surpases our finite experiences With something that even reason cannot explain. Try to quantify it with your senses. If you do, you shall fail. It is beyond all sensory experience; Love is part of existence that Is at once experienced and Also transcends anything we can Ever see, touch, taste, smell, or hear. Rock on! Great poem and no arguements here.. ![]() With a little piece of tomorrow, You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye. Because today won't last forever, And the past will only make you cry. |

Thank ye...though I do kind of wish someone would debate the point with me, just for the fun of it. "If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing." --Kingsley Amis |

Warmth in the heart is a euphamism, something that is merely a poetic device. One can get butterflies in the stomach when riding on a roller coaster--does that mean I'm in love with the roller coaster? And the others are generally associated with Love, but passion is an animalistic state of being and not necessarily love. And I hug people all the time, but I'm not necessarily in love with them. Also, empiricism states that we can only have knowledge of things we've experienced. What is "love" for one person may not hold true for another, so we cannot have any kind of objective definition. However, I do appreciate the fact that someone refuted me. Thanks.< !signature--> "If you can't annoy somebody, there's little point in writing." --Kingsley Amis [This message has been edited by gofor42 (edited 10-23-2000).] |
