            There Was A Time

There was a time, when the eyes were like icy blue steel,
A time when the power of his being, was live and real,
A time when he and millions more, gave their heart and soul.
A time when honor, country, and pride was an admired goal,

There was a time, when he was looked up to by all who knew,
A time when the country didn't have to be told what to do.
A time when fathers, brothers and sons didn't waver at the call,
A time when they were proud and unafraid to risk it all.

There was a time, when the anthem was played, you would proudly see,
A time when parents and children alike, were glad to honor thee.
A time when the young were quiet, showed respect, and dignity,
A time when we remembered our honored past, our history.

There was a time, when the honor of a man could not be bought,
A time when this was proved over and over, by the wars he fought.
A time when people stood together and said, this we will not do,
A time when freedom meant more than the fear of death to you.

There was a time, as I wrote this poem, that I felt I could see.
A time when all my comrads, were young and strong, like we used to be,
A time when we were eager to go, no matter where, for our country.
A time when thoughts of any thing different, would never occur to you or me.

There was a time, I have heard my grandfather say.
A time when we were free, not under a tyrants heel, like today.
A time when our ideals were high and our courage had not been sold,
A time when we were not afraid, hearts were strong and bold.

There was a time, is it now? do we deliver all we fought and died for.
A time we say to our dead of all our history, I will fight no more.
A time I hope will never come for yours and mine, but it could you know,
A time that if you aren't willing to stand and hold, it all could go.

There was a time, but it never came to pass, this land is to strong,
A time that only threatened to come, but we quickly righted that wrong.
A time that could never be, for our childrens children were able to see,
A time that will never come, because the price is to high, not to be free.

Great message, Bill! Freedom is too precious to take for granted!

Freedom is like a bird.......... when caged it's song is dull....this Bill is a fine tribute and I feel warning to a truth.
