Amidst the tangled meadow grass,
I know she watches as I pass.
This mother meadowlark who's laid
some speckled eggs and unafraid,
will brood them faithfully, until,
from out their shells, the hatchlings spill.

Her mate is not so pleased that I
am daily passing their nest by,
so I will choose a different trail,
to reach the road and fetch my mail.
I owe them quite a debt, you see,
for lovely songs they sing to me.

What a nice way to pay their rent, with sweet songs!   And what a sweet song you have written in return! It is always fun to watch birds raising their families, isn't it?

This is lovely.  I hadn't heard a meadowlark since I left North Dakota.  I went back for a visit after many years and the first thing I heard when I stepped out of the car in Western North Dakota were the beautiful notes of the Meadow Lark.  It instantly transported me to my childhood. Joyce

Marilyn:  Thanks for reading this and commenting.  Yes, I love to see the birds nesting and raising young.  Living in the country as we do, we have a variety of birds that nest here, including humming birds, my all time favorite.

BettyLou~
What a lovely scene you've painted for us to enjoy.
The area in which I live is replete
with the lovely melodies of many species ...
and I am the pleased recipient of their songs.

Thanks for allowing me entry to your meadow of melody.

Melissa:  Thank you.  However this is not written about spring this year.  So far we don't have any and had snow again last night. Seeing your location, I suppose you are not any better off?

Dear Yu Lan:  I'm sorry you don't have meadowlarks, although I know you have beautiful birds there.  A meadowlark is roughly the size of a robin, with a soft gray back, bright yellow breast with a cark "V" across it about half way down. It has an area around the eges of the breast with tiny white feathers and dark spots on them.  It's song is lovely with a trilling, flute like quality.  We love hearing them.

Nice iambic rhythm together with some creative enjambment and excellent clarity of scene help to make this a very restful read.

Thanks.
