      I Wonder Still

It lay there on the slope, it was dark in color, a splash of yellow caught my eye,
As I moved toward it I could see what it was, and I wanted to pass it by.
But as I drew closer I could see, the reason for it being in this lonely, forgotten place.
I picked it up and gazed upon the hole, I knew he had died, and wondered of his face.

The helmet had a seven on the side, with a yellow shield in the background,
That meant that the Seventh Calvary had fought here, and lost this man to an enemy rifle round.
From the angle and position of the hole, I knew death had come fast,
He had courage I knew, for he was faceing his enemy, when he breathed his last.

I wondered about this man then, sometimes I still do, and that was almost fifty years ago,
Was he young like me, or an old vetran from the last war, I'll never know.
Nor does it matter, neither then or now, I never knew him, why should I care.
But I do, I have never forgot this man, I can't help but wonder who he was who died there.

He had a mother who surely bore him with love, raised him with care, now he's gone,
Did he have a wife and children? if so, then how hard it must have been for them to go on alone.
I know it would not have made any difference, but I wish I had not seen this place,
For I wonder often about this man, and have this desire to have seen his face.

I know it would serve no purpose, my knowing this man's face or his smile,
But I have always had the feeling, that I would have liked to have talked to him awhile.
There is no way for me to explaine this, better men than I have tried before,
This helmet is just a reminder of the real cost, and the total waste of war.

As I recalled this brief moment, I felt a need to share it with you. Bill

Very moving peace.  I have no words to describe the emotions and feelings this stirs and I agree the total waste of war to see the one at your side fall from your foe.

Exellent job.

*blinks*  You've quite a way with words.. This brought a huge lump to my throat..

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.
