This poem first started out as an assignment for Sociology, and before I completed the assignment, a friend of mine showed me a short poem by an author unknown which was related to the same theme, and in turn it inspired me and so I decided to turn my assignment into a poem. I wrote it really fast, for I had so many ideas in my head. I have wanted to write a poem like this for years and finally I did. ~*Welcome To My Generation*~ Welcome to the nineties. The paradox of our time in the nineties is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower minds. We travel more, but, fail to really see the beauty of this world, we spend more, but have less, we buy more, yet, enjoy it less. We see the value of winning the lottery, but, not the value of a hard-earned dollar. We have larger homes and smaller families, more conveniences, but, less time. We have more knowledge, but less good judgement, more experts, but more problems, more medicine, with less wellness. We have more professions, but less jobs. We have more peace treaties, and less unity, more power, but, less control, more cell phones, and less communicating. We have multiplied our possesions, but reduced our values. We've learned how to make a living, but, not a life, we've added years to life, but not life to years. We have more churches and more religions, but less faith. We see more, but listen less, we admire more, and respect less, we have more to give, but are less compassionate. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but, have trouble crossing the street to say hello to the new neighbour. We've conquered outer space, but not inner space, we've cleaned up the air, but, polluted the soul, we've split the atom, but, not our prejudice. We have a larger population, but there is more emptiness. These are the times of tall men, and short character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the times of the haves and the have nots, times of older folks who are young at heart, but, younger people who feel far too old in their shoes. These are the times of world peace, but, with domestic warfare, more safety measures, but more weapons to kill. These are the days where there is more running to the elevator of success, and less strolling through the park to hear the birds sing. We have more lesiure, but less fun, we laugh more often, but have less to smile about. We have an abundance of food, but there is less nutrition and more hungry mouthes to feed. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce, of fancier houses, but broken homes, of colour TV's, but less family togetherness at the dinning room table. These are the days of vast technology, and fast times but we have forgotten about the simple joys in life. It is a time of laptop computers and e-mail, but, less letter writing to an old friend. These are the times of wishing and betting, instead of doing and becoming. It is a time when there is much in the show window, and nothing in the stockroom. These are the times when people have more choices, more say and more freedom, but there are less people truly making a difference. We turn our noses up too often, love too seldom, and hate too much. You see, in the nineties, these are the days where we desire everything, and in the process know the value of nothing. Welcome to my generation. By Melissa Honeybee |

Melissa, this great work. there is much truth and feeling here, and you convey it well. Not all those who wander are lost. ~J.R.R. Tolkien |

*claps approvingly* I agree, this should be published somewhere.. I awake to a world I don't want. There is no transition for me. I am in heaven. I am in hell. |

Right as rain. This should be published. And also sadly, everything you say is the truth. I hope future generations won't be disguraged and I hope they still would like to be welcomed into the world. Joy Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old time is still a-flying, And this same flower that smiles today To-morrow will be dying. -Robert Herrick |

This was read to me at an FHA festival, and I could NOT find a copy of it! I have been looking for it for 2 weeks. Thanks so much for posting it! Life defines no more than what it is you ask for. April 20, 2000 Alicia A. Renzelman |

This is a great read, it says so much, so well. We all think some of these things, at times. You have brought it all together. Good job!! |
