The flag hanging from the house across the street
is barely visible,
as it waves to passersby
from behind the branches of a large tree
on the lawn.

It casts its shadow
against the sunny side of the house
long trails of tears
in the bright morning

It is as if it is calling
Remember me? Remember me?
And the brief glimpse of red
through the leaves as they sway in the breeze
reminds me of wars fought, lives lost, sacrifices.

I can’t see the blue stars
but I know instinctively that they are there.
The badges of courage, honor and determination,
shining the color of hope.

Later,as I leave for the picnic and parade,
the flag is still there, struggling to be seen
from behind the old tree
and I take a moment to answer its call,
Remember me?

Ah..there is a flag on the house across the street from mine, of course there is a flag on mine too...as we drove around today, it amazed me how many didn't fly the flag. And then I remembered, we celebrate those who gave their lives so we can have the freedom not to fly the flag... thank you for your wonderful poem...

Wow, very well done.
I'm sure many people will appreciate this poem soon.
I liked it a lot.

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

I'm in love with my shadow
I admire it daily

I rarely pass a flag that I don't stop and give pause to my hurried thoughts. Memorial Day is a wonderful memory to the tall mountains, vast forest, plains rich in grain and the strength of memories. Thank you.
