Here's something I wrote a few years ago and rewrote. Any comments are appreciated. Turkey Love Looking into his wife's eyes. "Your such a beautiful thing," he said. "Your walk. Your talk. " Bobbing his head. "I could just kiss you," giving her a smooch. "You know? That special day is almost here, my pretty one. Yes, and it's just for you. I'll try and not be cruel, I promise. It has to be done." sighing. "You'll forgive me won't you my sweet feathery one?" "Will you cut that out! His wife barked. "I'm not the turkey!" Shoving him off her lap. "I don't want to kiss you right now." "But honey I was only playing," he said, "Just fun-in." "Well stop the fun-in! Get the ax! And go and cut that turkey's head off. Make sure you bleed him good before you bring him in. You’re going to help with the plucking too," she said getting angrier. " And if you think I'm going to do all the work. You’re crazy!" "We can put it off until later? Can't we?" He said pleading. "You’re the one who fell in love with that stupid bird! Not me! You go and cut its head off. Or I will," pointing toward the front door, giving the last ultimatum. "Well all right," he said under his breath, walking out the door dragging his feet. I don't know why she has to insist on having turkey anyway, mumbling to himself. Heck, that Rhode Island Red hasn't laid an egg all week. Strolling from the barn with the ax in his hand he could see the gobbler stretching its neck to get a better look at him. "Well here I am my feathered friend," he said while unlatching the gate and walking up to him. "I'll try and make it a clean cut," feeling the weight of his duty as the bird looked at him frightened and sensed something was wrong, squawking and running in small circles like a coward. "You’re not making this easy my pet. Let daddy do what needs to be done." Then the gobbler suddenly stopped and bowed its head defeated waiting its fate. "Don't look like that. You're sure making it hard on me," as tears ran down his face he took the bird by the neck and lead it toward a stump to do his deed all along while it panicked and flapped it’s wings forcing him to squeeze harder. Suddenly the bird went limp. “Well, maybe it’s better this way,” he said, taking a deep breath he raised the axe. Entering the house he took a seat at the kitchen table leaning over holding a bloody rag. "Your getting blood all over the place. Go and wash up! Idiot! Feeling sorry for youself over a stupid bird. Aren't you? Are you listening to me?" He's wife said being impatient with him. "I'm not feeling bad about the turkey," he said. "I cut my hand. Moving the rag away showing her. "See?” "How and the hell did you do that? Couldn't you be more careful?" she said. " Next thing you're going to tell me, you didn't cut that turkey's head off. Looking up smiling. "I didn't," he said softly. "And why not?" she screamed. Taking a deep breath, he said. "Well. I was just about ready to. When it screamed. 'Don't kill me!' I was so shocked. I cut my hand with the ax.” "Your crazy!" his wife said. " You’re plumb out of your mind. You hear me? You idiot!” Pacing across the room stopping at the front door. "Where's that ax?" She asked abruptly. "It's just outside the door against the porch," he said in a low voice, ashamed. "I'll cut its head off.” Then added under her breath, “You darn fool," as she exited the house slamming the door. Sitting at the table he was puzzled, pondering. She doesn't believe me. Does she? Wondering. No one will believe me. "Oh No!" he screamed as he ran out the door in an effort to stop her. With in a few yards from the bin he saw her pulling the turkey's neck over the stump and as she raised the ax. A voice came screaming in his head. "Wake up! Wake up!" Realizing someone was shaking him. "Wake up dear your having a bad dream." Realizing it was his wife and he had been sleeping. "I told you not to eat so much. You almost ate that whole turkey by yourself," she said, concerned, patting his stomach. "I feel about as sick as that bird did before they cut off his head," he said. "Boy, what a dream." "Oh? So now you think you’re a butterball turkey?" She said patting his tummy harder." "Don't do that dear," he said. "Please your making it worse." "Oh? I'm sorry," she said acting concerned. "Your such a beautiful thing," she said. "Your walk. Your talk.” Bobbing her head. "I could just kiss you," giving him a smooch. "You know? That special day is almost here, my pretty one. Yes, and it's just for you. I'll try and not be cruel, I promise. It has to be done," sighing. "You'll forgive me won't you my sweet feathery one?" Putting his hand over his mouth he jumped off the bed and ran quickly toward the bathroom. Sitting up in the bed his wife called out. "Well I had to all the cooking but you didn't have to try and eat it all in one sitting." I guess he ate so much it was only a matter of time until he became a turkey, she thought to herself. Poor thing, next time I'll cook a smaller one. © 1999 Merlyn Hearn All rights reserved |
