I was sixteen and you were the blonde, blue-eyed stranger who washed my clothes, made my breakfast, drove me to school. Many years later, I wake each morning and see your face smiling back at me in my mirror. You, who waited patiently until I finally discovered that you had always been there. Now, when I see myself as a stranger reflected in the eyes of my children, I recognize the sacrifices that you made for me, your beloved child and I know who you are. I feel your pride swelling near my heart, your laughter in my voice, your tears against my cheek. and I take comfort in my discovery that against all odds I have become you. I know who you are. You are my dear, dear mother, who turned away all the glittering gifts the world has to offer, so that you could pass on to me the greatest gift of all. Yourself.
