Sometimes I wear a cross
On a chain around my neck
A pretty cross stiched bookmarker
Marks a chapter in my Bible.

Printed in my bible
Is an artist's illustration
Of Jesus on the cross
An artist rendition
Of the Crufix
Is hung upon my wall
In honor of my devotion
Of the Savior's great sacrifice
To save those who were lost

Today it was brought to my attention
How those images of the cross
Are all so unreal

In reality do I really want to see the face of Jesus
When he hung upon that cross
For his face was ugly and bruised and bleeding
Swollen and deformed from the beatings
And the hammering of the nails that were
Drove deep within his skull

He was beat beyond recognition
Even his followers could not recognize his face

He hung there on the cruel tree
Sweating great drops of blood
Mingled with the saliva of those
Who spat upon him
What little clothing he wore
Was stained with blood
And bodily fluids

Yet with parched swollen and bleeding lips
And the taste of blood within his mouth
He cried "Father forgive them,
For they know not what they do."

As the odors of the rancid dried blood
Penetrated the air
And darkness fell over the land
Jesus's heart reached
Out to all mankind
Thinking not of his own needs
While his life's blood
Drained away
He forgave

As his flesh was tearing
He fulfilled his mission
Giving God his full submission
In his last breath
He cried "It is finished"

The price had been paid

Is it enough to hang a cross around my neck?
Is it enough to read my Bible?
Is it enough to hang a Cruifix on the wall?
Is it enough to say a prayer?
Is it enough to attend church?
Is it enough to put some offering in the plate?
Is it enough to do without?

What is enough?

oh, Septsong; "What is enough"! My answer is; only total surrender, absolute and complete surrender to Jesus; mind ,body heart soul and will. This beautifully written poem touched me very deeply. You brought the full impact to the for and made it too vivid, but you are right. Jesus suffered more horribly than we want to imagine. All I can think of is; "Lord have mercy on me, a sinner"      Ellie

Very strong piece! And what a reminder of all he's gone through. If we could actually have a picture like that of Jesus to remind us what it is that he actually went through.
With your words you've painted that picture, one I really never saw in that way before. We know what he's done for us, but the pictures painted of him are neat and clean you know? Not showing the real pain of what he went through for us. Thus we tend to forget the true impact of it all, how much pain He must have been in, and yet, he hung there and still taught.

In our view, there is nothing we could possibly do to make it enough. But in God's view, to read His letter shows you care. To have faith and love Him is what He wanted. And His grace is sufficient.
What an awesome God we have, and an awesome poet like you to bring across such a message!

I stand in awe of the tremendous picture you've painted here!

SeptSong~
A very moving piece.
Not a very pretty picture was the
savagery done our Lord.  You've depicted
scenes that make me cringe for what
He suffered.

I do like to wear the cross as
an affirmation of my belief for
others to be aware of.
Sometimes, in moments of doubt,
I can touch the cross on the chain
around my neck and feel a strength
and serenity come over me.

Thank you for sharing.

Excellent poem, Septsong. Very well written. We could never repay Him for all that He went through for us, that's for sure.
