A Child’s Friend

The sun golden warm,
fields are decked in green
A small child takes joy
from all beauty seen

She runs through the fields
takes joy in living
Rolling down grass hills
fills her, thanks giving

Laying on her back
watching clouds go by
Nothing in her life
now to make her cry

She is six years old
filled with love of life
Too soon day draws closed
her life fills with strife

In her joy forgot
the end of the week
Soon time for safety
this small child will seek

Skips home, full of life,
the dinner hour draws near
Slows her steps as heart
knows what there's to fear

She can hear the words,
she flees blocking screams
Running her heart cries
it's not as in dreams

Deep into the forest,
arms of her friend, flies
With heart on HIS chest
HE soothes her hurt cries

This friend of hers
others do not know
Does to this little child
such a great love show

Holding close, whispers
only love to gain
Knowing in her soul
HE understands pain

That just for a little
she will suffer still
Learning love divine
to do the Father’s will

She draws strength and love
from HIM to carry on
Looks deep in HIS eyes
she nods and is gone

At home she wonders
all HE's shown to her
And wonders who hurt
HIS hands she isn't sure

Deep within her heart
she knows HE is love
Given to a child
whose prayers have reached above

Karen; This poem touched me so deeply the first time I read it. I grieve for what so many children are called upon to experience today. You have written so well about such a hurtful thing. God is using you to touch people's lives with the awareness of this tragedy. Bless you for speaking out. Wanda
