He Called it "Called to Higher Ground
(written of the Sunday message last Sunday, it was not an uplifting message. I've revised the form and many of the words that I'd written during the service. This was to accomodate writing a sentence-poem form for an online workshop I'm taking.)

Hot potatoes have eyes.
Corn stalks have ears.
Let me stay away from words that bring fears.

Meddle, meddle, peddle, peddle.
Your wares mess with me.
They roughen the roads I travel and throw me in the sea.

I fall into a sea of anxious living.
It’s full of pain, remorse and rue.
I lift my hands in desperation in deciding what to do.

I seek to find my path.
One that aligns within His will.
I need a balm for my soul; please let my heart be still.

Where might I go?
I seek strength and verve.
How might I handle the world as it mangles every nerve?

I come into the house.
A house that was built to restore.
May my sinew and my faith carry me back through the door.

Yet restoration’s stripped from the plan.
The words are presented to my ear.
They add salt to my wounds and bring horrendous fear.

Help me find the light.
Illumine this fellowship you call.
If I cannot see, I shall stumble and fall.

My knees are black and blue.
They’re lacerated and bruised.
My tears sting as they drip;  “Oh, Lord, help me flee this ruse!”

Yes he called it, “Called to Higher Ground.”
Yet, he spent his words in lowly trails.
He ranted and he raved on the pain of life’s travails.

Then his words rendered but a tiny, tiny spark.
It was only a glimmer in the gray.
Then he sent us out to try to find some light in our day.

We all need to hear the true word which many times can sting, yet we need much more to hear of God's forgiving love.  I have vivid memories of a thunderous voice as the fist was slammed trying to make a point.  However, it only achieved filling me with fear and dread and it's taken years to feel the comfort of God's love.  Thanks for sharing.

VAS,

During these times I find it very easy to find the Devil's advocate and find it difficult to return to those doors called church... I do understand your need to find comfort, but let me encourage you to look for comfort within those things that are uplifting and good.  I know that God has more for you than frivolous harsh words during these times when America grieves her loss and faces uncertain times of war.  I do believe that we do need to seek higher ground.  We need to find a place of encouragement and unity within the body of Christ.  Be encouraged my friend for God loves you and He will never forsake you nor leave you comfortless.   -Bob

Thank you all for your comments. Just to clarify, this sermon was presented the Sunday BEFORE he horrible tragedy.  I was out of town on the Sunday AFTER the tragedy and therefore don't know how he addressed this situation.  I so hope he spent more time on the solution to the pain than on the cause for the pain.  It is quite known by many that focussing on the problem and not the solution pushes resolution farther away.
