Dear Paul,

I am writing
Because you have
Transformed your life
Since Damascus.

And of course
Because believers
Respect the man you've become.

A Christian killer once
A man of the word now
One who speaks unwaveringly
About the truth of Christ.

So I hope
You will understand
Why I have chosen you
To help me convince the other ten
To look at what I did differently.

The apostles have been talking
About my lapse in faithfullness
To the new followers never mentioning
How hard I worked before and
After the resurrection.

I was the only one who offered
To follow Jesus into Jerusalem
When he brought Lazarus back from the dead
Why doesn't anyone remember that?

I think it's unfair
To depict me as the doubter
I've heard John has included
My blunder in his book.

I've brought this to your attention
Because before Damascus
You didn't believe either
You needed to "see" for yourself.

I don't want to be remembered
For what I did wrong
The apostles don't dwell on
Who you were before.

Can you speak to them
So I no longer look foolish
Who would benefit
To know of my failure?

Signed
Thomas (Didymus)

(This is the first in a series of 8 poems that Thomas writes to Paul (in my mind of course)).

Very creative, Jeen! And if it's any consolation to Thomas, I think the portrayal of his wavering faith has helped many a person in the same situation. Again, very creative writing!

Very imaginative.  You seem to have gotten to the mind of Doubting Thomas very well.  And he was no different than most of us today.  Joyce

I tightened up a few lines in editing, because I wanted to get across the point that what Thomas did not know, is what we also do not know...that our weaknesses are what makes us humble and approachable as humans.

It is the characters in the bible and in life who have blown it yet dusted off themselves and moved on that I most admire.

Thanks

People tend to be a bit hard on Thomas, but we can't forget that his confession was one of the most profound and fullest in the New Testament, unequalled before even by Peter... "My Lord and My God".  Sometimes honest doubt can be the harbinger of revelation and faith when the light of Christ comes.

And Oh yeah, if I remember correctly, Jesus said to two other disciples on the road to Emmaus, "Oh fools and slow of heart to believe".  These examples (including Thomas) were more or less indicative of the disciples as a whole.  None of the disciples were exemplary of quick and unwavering faith during the time following the ressurection of our Lord.

Stephen.

Very good.... I think we can all relate to doubting Thomas so very well.  Thank God that our lives aren't written in a book for all mankind to see.  Nice job again giving Thomas perhaps some justifiable recourse. -Bob

Jeen, I loved this. Wonderfully written. Presented in such a clear and creative way. I think you will touch many hearts and minds with this series. I wish I had thought of it, what a wonderful premise! I can't wait for the next one.

This was great to read and made the story of Thomas so real and as if it could be happening right now, which it probably is somewhere!  Great imaginative flow. Will look forward to the next one.

I love this - what a great idea you've written!   But I have to agree with others - Thomas, his doubting, and then his declaration of complete faith gives an example that has been followed by many who are grateful their path to believing isn't public.

I was reading over this poem -- when I noticed many people had written positive things about it.

I had written a series of letters from Thomas to Paul, but when I showed them to my Pastor he looked at me as if I had two heads.

So I never posted the rest of them.

I'll post the second.
