The Unclean and the HallowedWhen we look upon the unclean thing to entertain its view our perception grows distorted and our vision falls askew. Then walking by our sight we question things we thought we knew. Our spirit’s life grows thorny then as safer trails are lost. The undergrowth spreads rampantly and clearest signs are mossed. Did we take the time to weigh our choices reckoning the cost? When we gaze upon the unclean thing that casts mesmeric light, we gain unlawful knowledge of the evil and the right. We should have known what’s good alone and spoiled the urge to bite. For the knowledge which was promised is subjective to the core. Not merely understanding wrong we’ve lived it more and more, inciting from the serpent’s ranks a long and bitter war. When our eyes peruse the hallowed thing that’s lifted for our curse, even though our search may find our conflict seeming worse, beyond all doubt the gears will slow then labor in reverse. And rest will surely follow since we’ll be what we behold. Looking to the mercy seat the tried may shine as gold. And sheep with longing eyes will spy their shepherd in the fold. When we watch with care the hallowed thing our minds will be remade. Dead imagery and darkened thoughts with sinful roots will fade. In currencies of righteousness the poor in strength will trade. And holiness will spring alive without which none shall see the Lord in all his splendor and unrivaled majesty. The sacred and profane desire your ken. Which shall it be? SDJ 6/2001 |

You are so wise Stephanos. We cannot play in the dirt without getting dirty and if we turn our sights toward God, his goodness will rub off on us. Right on. Joyce |

Magnificent poetic Wisdom, Stephen! You are so gifted and I am so lifted up in Spirit by the Power of God's truth in this lovely poem! Ellie A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails. |

I think you are so talented and wise in crafting such an analytic poem, discerning the effects of our basic choices between right and wrong. You are to be commended for your efforts, and thanked for your timely message. Thank You Sir, David Every Day's a Blessing |

So many times we just jump in things without thinking them through and weighing the consequences beforehand. Great write here, Stephanos. You have much wisdom. ![]() All writing comes |

Stephans, A very well grounded poem that offers much truth to the reader. I noticed a little more metaphoric imagery in this poem than those I've read of yours in the past.... and I really liked that. Bob <>< |
