Three men I see upon their cross That stands on Golgoth hill Three men I see and one is cloaked in light But only one there hangs his head In disillusioned prayer Only He can see the glory of this night One had been a thief and paid for sin With nails and tearing flesh He accepted then the price he had to pay But paradise now welcomed him For his spirit had been touched By the Rabbi who had died with him that day The noon hour came in sky’s ink black And lightning burst the spell The blood ran down the wood of hallowed grain As mothers cried and children wept Jehovah smote the crowd And heaven cried a low cry of distain The picture of the third lone man Hanging limply on that hill As always been inscrutable to me My soul as been a bloody battlefield Raging with my doubt The reason though I’ve not been blessed to see Two thousand years have passed since then In actions and in words And still no hope that mankind cannot die The devil rides on steel cold steeds And gathers up the spoils The third man ……perhaps it’s you and I ? This is interesting. Little is said about this third man. It takes courage and insight to identify with him. Thank you for sharing this. |

Thanx........I think faith is a difficult topic to tackle......and to respond to.......but sometimes the bug won't go away......some things wrankle......if you look the Bible is populated by lots of shadowy figures.....this man is one of them. Regards Jon |

Jon, Difficult to write about but you did splendidly, Historical referecnes to an event that still holds much hope and promise to us if we can make peace with the one man who hung there in our place. Very thoughtful and thought provoking piece. Dennis :^) |

What a vivid picture you painted! It is hard to identify yourself with the 3rd man, but you've done a great job! You've made it so we can do the same as well! Excellent writing! Thank you for bringing this over to share with us! <*\\\>< I know not what the future holds, but I know Who holds the future. |

What comes to mind to me, is choice. Did the 3rd man make a choice that day? Did he choose to reject what the other man saw as truth? To this day, the love of God is displayed in many ways. Still, we have a choice to reject or accept. Well written, interesting piece my friend. Deb |

Excellent writing, Jon. You have captured the essence of the eternal search for truth and salvation. beautifully inspirational. Ellie Summers haunting melody that awakens the butterflies, calling them to join the dance in their silent song of praise to God. eL |

Thank you for sharing this well written piece. I've identified with so many in the bible but until now, hadn't thought of being like this third one. |

Hi Jon, Oooe! this is most powerful and very good writing. I went back to Luke 23:27-; and the difference in the two thieves (malefactors) were their hearts..the one going to paradise, seeing Jesus hanging there, having done no crime; the other, joining with the mockers saying, if you be king save yourself; never giving thought to the fact Jesus had done nothing wrong; I think their hearts made them who they were and because of their hearts, one could see truth, one was selfish and was looking out for self; just my thoughts and so enjoyed your sending me to the Word for manna. Marcy,I think you touched on this with a good point. One rejected Christ being blind from selfish pride. The other man, humble was able to see the truth. Deb |

Had to come back to this after traveling about two hrs for the co.(my meditation time) and Deb, your thoughts ARE EXACTLY what I was going to remark. The Holy Spirit is wonderful to us when we hunger. Deb, Exactly almost word for word...what I was going to write to condense my previous post.(after meditation) Jon, I appreciate you for this lovely, obviously studied poem of scripture and thoughts. Such a blessing. Marcy |

I find it amazing that a poem can almost take on a life of its own as this one seems to have done..........its wonderful to be the conduit of so many warm comments........for me the mystery of the third man still goes on......every man has his own path to tread..... Thanx Jon [This message has been edited by Jon Mewett (edited 10-21-2000).] |

Well, I have to admit that I am more than interested in pursuing the knowledge of trying to understand all of this and the point that you brought up and the thoughts of Marcy and Deb have more than spark some understanding in me. I thank you for penning this so beautifully and with so much light for much afterthought and cause for study. |

hmmm, never really thought about it that way, but it could be that Christ in there between our good and our bad, both men had done the same crime, only the one man chose to conform to Christ and accept Him, the other man, conformed, and was bound with the world. The first man, in heaven with Christ for eternity, the second man, just as the world, passed from our minds, and there was nothing remaining. |
