Someone told me once that swans, although beautiful and graceful on the surface of the water, have to work a lot under the water to show us that beauty. . . that they hide all the work, the pain that they must go through to appear that way to us.

Little did I realize that this metaphor applies to all of us. . . we hide our pain and put forth our best face to the world. . . is this right?

Sven

The swan glides across the lake of life
Her grace amazes us all
Her beauty enchants us
Her smile makes us happy

But beneath the beauty
There lies a secret
We know not that the swan must
Work to show us this beauty

She hides much. . .
Pain, sorrow, lost love
She puts forth the face of beauty
To hide a life unlived

Swim on gentle swan
For we feel your pain
We will send you our love
So that you may fly again

I am truly touched by this one. Yes, I think we all hide our own pain at times to allow the beauty others see in us shine through. Thanks for the wonderful post.

Wonderful indeed Sven, yes we are like the swans aren't we?

You've touched on one of my favorite topics here - I'm fortunate enough to be surrounded by these gorgeous creatures - I'll tell you this - They don't trust easily, and they do hide behind an impervious facade - but when they do learn to trust you, you'll have a glorious life-long friend in them, indeed...

I too am touched by this..perhaps the pain we suffer and live through is truly what makes us, and the swans beautiful...

Your poem has made me think of this...Swans mate for life. In LA there is a wooden boat made to look like a swan--it glides in a small lake in the middle of the city. A real swan has fallen in love with it and swims beside it, a mate in heart only.

Thank you my friends. . .

Perhaps what Alwye said about "pain making us beautiful" is true. . . without knowing pain and sorrow, we cannot know true beauty. . . words to think about. . .

And the example that Martie has given about the swan and the swan boat is also something to consider. . . do swans give their heart willingly? Perhaps. . . perhaps not. . .

Sven
Never had the thought occurred
To so behold this lovely bird
But next time one comes into view
I surely will then think of you

Very lovely

You describe me perfectly. I don't think I'm the only one who does it.
