In my re-occurring nightmare, he is there Freakishly tall and ghoulishly thin Resplendent in his Pokka-dotted suit, orange hair Yellow teeth and exaggerated blood red grin Travelling with the circus, this spooky clown Has come to beget mayhem and despair Into your lethargic, peaceful seashore town While you eat cotton candy and toss coins at the fair Under the velvet stratum of night he hides, With his always-watchful clown eyes, he appalls Black empty orbs shine with interest, he bides Time, while he juggles balls and takes pratfalls His overly cheerful chuckling face belies The arctic, deadly calculating mind within It is killing time for the girl with the doll’s eyes Anxious for the pleasure and terror to begin They search when she doesn't come home The town wonders how she got separated from friends And police ask why a fourteen-year-old girl was alone While the local paper predicts how this story will end A witness to this horror, frozen in slow motion dreams I see many towns like this, misery with no answers Morbid, how do I fit into his putrid scheme? What slimy secretion spawned this emergent cancer? In my nightmare I see him, his moves lightening fast Grabbing her wrist, knocking her down to the ground Always just outside my clear vision, out of my grasp In another time, another unsuspecting small town His face leans in and laughs His face leans in and laughs © June 1999 Corinne Bailey |

Corinne - So vividly descriptive ... I'll probably have nightmares ! There is another face the clown wears ... and it doesn't leave me laughing. Good job ! ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |

Inspired by Stephen King? This is truly chilling, Corinne. I can only hope that my nightmares do not mix with yours as I slumber. ------------------ Once I was brilliant, now I no longer shine, but the twinkle in my eye speaks of another time. |

This is chilling, Corinne. It reminded me of my daughter's fear of clowns (doesn't know why, just is spooked by them). This sounds like the nightmare to beat all nightmares. Very well done. ------------------ Denise |

Two things grin a lot....clowns and maniacs. This is an excellent job of combining the two. |
