This is obviously old... but then, so am I! LOL. I was nine years old when the President died, Nine years old when the nation cried For youth and promise too soon lost And the family that would bear the cost Of another son shot down. Surely the ones who share their dreams Are better than all the political schemes We're shown by those who seek to gain As much as they can, though they must remain Pretenders to the crown. Twenty years later, we are mourning still And wondering if there ever will Be a man come along who can carry the flame And unite the world in a chant of his name. Can such a one be found? Well, not being American I'm not aware too much of the history of your presidents - but I assume this is about JFK? Whoever it is this poem is very well constructed - and asks a poignant question. |

Suthern, This is GREAT ------------------ Yesterday is history, tomorrow just a mystery. And if today is good to me how could I ask for more? |

Enjoyed the poem. I was 11... as I tell my children, I am not old... just on the downhill slide of middle age... Very nicely done. |

Suthern: Being a brit...(yep, I know you know that even if you are blonde...*g*) I don't know how old I was, heck, I'm not sure I know now how old I am, how old am I?...LOL...see, no sleep addles the brain even more or is that age?..*g* Great tribute, a bit like me remembering where I was when Churchill died and giving my sister some of my chocolate, I think I was about 7... Great poem Auntie ... ... I fully agree it was a tragic loss but do you believe *he* was any better than current Pretenders ? Somehow he was lucky he didn't get the media frenzy about his private life that current candidates deal with ... Anyway, superb last stanza ! Smooches |

Thank you all very much for your kind comments... and ROFL @ Lincoln and a well preserved if ancient Balladeer! LOL Jef: I think... or certainly hope... that we'll never get so jaded that the assassination of a president doesn't profoundly affect us, regardless of our politics. It's true that he might have self destructed and died an ignominious blip on the pages of history... but that wasn't allowed to happen... instead, there was Dallas. I've never met an American of my generation that doesn't know exactly where they were and what they were doing when they learned that President Kennedy was dead... |

I remember where I was, and what I was doing. As we all did if we were old enough...Nicely done poem gal.....as usual.....One difference between President Kennedy and our current joke,......JFK would have resigned. He more than likely wouldn't have lied, and, his mistress was probably much better looking! |
