You Can Keep Your Drug Store Cowboys |

Whiskey talkin’ women chasers, Hang out in the bars- Piggin’ strings a’hangin’ From the mirrors of their cars. Acme boots and Wal-Mart hats- A buckle like a plate. They are a blight, - You’ll find in almost any western state. They tell you they are cowboys But they’ve never rode a horse- It don’t take much cow savvy, When you’re out there on the course. But ridin’ in a blizzard, Or in the pourin’ rain- Or have a horse fall on you, Then workin’ with the pain. Pullin’ calves in early spring- Changin’ bulls to steers- Vaccinate, and dehorn, Then swallow-fork their ears. Work from daylight thirty- To well into the night, Don’t leave much time for dances- Much less to drink or fight. You round up in October- That’s when you ship and brand... Then settle for the winter And lay off extra hands. So keep your drugstore cowboy’s They're mighty weak and small- But when it comes to plain hard work The cowhand’s standin’ tall. ------------------ Live large, people! ~GS~ http://www.geocities.com/montcogunslinger/HomePage.html |

Loved this! My late uncle was a fake cowboy, he donned the gear when he moved to Arizona, prior to that he lived in San Francisco for 20 years. After he died, I went to his house, looked at his cowboy hats hanging on the wall, his boa ties all in neat rows, the cowboy wallpaper in his bathroom, and realized that he really thought he was a cowboy. Odd... thanks for this poem! Corinne |

I will take the real cowhand the one that treasures cows and land and takes care of it, through dust and dirt and never grumbles when he's hurt. I will take the real cowpoke on concrete streets, he'd surely choke on gas fumes, he'd rather eat dust in him, I place my soul to trust. I will take the real cowboy, he favors not the little boy toys, but his horse, his woman, and his name to the real cowman, it's not a game. Well done, 'Slinger - keep them coming. |

While I liked everything about this write ... I smiled the most at the 'daylight thirty' ... how clever ! You write of things that make me glad I can experience them through your words. Thank you for taking me along on a true Cowboy's Ride. ------------------ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |
