Thoughts of Aunt Lolly

She was the first person to die in my life
I was seven and she was
the sound of bracelets
and a fragrance something
like my mother’s handkerchief drawer.

A living breathing person
with real tangible human qualities
a person with blemishes perhaps
and dry chapped hands,
who washed her dainty things by hand
with a bar of soap
then admired them
sparkling clean
and hanging on the line,
and later breathed in the fragrance
of sunlight.

How sad that she should be reduced
to just bracelets and the fragrance
from a handkerchief drawer.

Oh, Martie ... what a memory pot you stirred with this one.
Grandma Wainright's tiny home smelled of home-made potpourri lavish with cinnamon.
The sound of music boxes filled the evening air. Probably explains why I collect them to this day.
She would be proud to be remembered this way.
I'm sure your Aunt Lolly would be glad that you remember her by the sound of her bracelets.
I know that I will now wonder how my kin will remember me. Hadn't really thought of it before.
