I Knew I Was Not Alone by © Richard Budig 1997 I watched, concealed in the shadows, As a blazing harvest moon raised itself Above the rooftops of my little town, Casting it’s hot light upon the cold grass, beckoning to me, calling to me, Seducing me to come out, To reveal myself and my hiding place. I was tempted, but in that split second, Just before seduction lulls to sleep its prey, I felt, more than saw, the rustle of electrons, And I knew . . . I knew I was not alone. And so I held my place in the deepening shadows Of a kindly and embracing old blue spruce As I watched the bloody predator-moon Trundle on, stalking silently across the sky Looking for other little boys trudging home After dark from the neighborhood grocery, A half gallon of milk leaking quietly Into the shadows cast by the old spruce, And by me as I crouched and shivered there. |
