A Plan For The Future by ©Richard Budig 1999 Rally round the fire, boys. Toss in a scrap or two. The old code books, and the cipher manual, that one laying there. Don’t need ‘em anymore. Last shot’s been fired. The armistice’s signed. the ammo’s been blown, the turrets are empty, and the boys are going home. And as the old books hissed in the roaring flames, a slight little man begged a scrap of paper from a sooty soldier at the edge of the fire. What’re you writing? asked the tired soldier. Nothing . . . nothing much, replied the slim man with eyes brighter than fire. But the soldier persisted until the thin one replied, it’s not much. Just a plan, a plan for the future. |
