Zilpah I Property Ten ewes, three rams, a dozen lambs, two homers of the finest grain, a camel skin, translucent thin the price lord Laban's to attain this slave. These hands for toil's demands his farthest thought, to entertain as concubine, strong sons define his wealth, whose power they sustain. To have a choice to add one's voice when you're the focus of decision, a heady thought, before you're bought and masters laugh in mock derision, past puberty, pure property, choice cattle sold in prime condition. II Prosperity First Leah's four and when no more she sent me to his sleeping side; two sons I bore, not long before another pair sustained her pride. All women change as Fates arrange in birth, new life she shall provide, sustaining fare, protective care whose future hopes in Jacob hide. His lot in life, avoiding strife that he induced, and must reside in alien lands, while Esau's stands. Yet, Wisdom did make him decide to give prestige to Leah's slave so Zilpah's sons, as heirs divide. --H. Arlequin . . . . I love your "Women of the Word" series. 'Tis wonderful to read some of my favorite bible stories and characters brought to life in your verse. Please, keep them coming! PS: When is it Ruth's turn? She has had more than one famous poem written about her ... I'm sure you could come up with something equally fascinating. Another excellent poem. It invokes the senses strongly. Do I sense a "Genesis Epic" materializing? |
