Listening to every heart

High Ground

All around me there is some serious griping
troubled souls in need of well-meant hyping,
sometimes it can really get me down,
that's when I head for the high ground.

Some get a kick out of dishing despair,
then act as if they never care;
so the only way I can turn it around,
is when I head for the high ground.

I care not for gossip or righteous stories,
for in such vain things there is no glory,
and nay, I do not wear a crown,
but simply step up, toward high ground.

I could follow a simpler road,
I could lie, and treat people cold,
but all of that would bring me down,
when I'd rather head for high ground.

and I'd really rather not get stuck
in useless misery and self-made luck,
no, in someone's muck I'll not lie down,
Lord, lift my feet toward high ground.

Perhaps it's a road less traveled on,
but my real friends know I'm never gone,
for they're with me, standing all around,
when we travel toward high ground.

Dear Sunshine,
No need to take the higher ground
If you are in your friends' surround
It's hard to judge another's intention
Might be sorrow and not pretention
Might be someone reaching out
Might need your hand to sort things out
I hope that you don't go too far
For you are sure a shining star
A lovely poet, a lovely friend
Might be that person's happy end
But then again, I cannot judge
You might be trudging in real sludge!
If that's the case,I am with you
And heading for the hilltops, too!

Very poigniant piece Sunshine and there are times when I'll be standing right next to you on that higher ground....

A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!

Elizabeth, friend to all sorts,
a trip with you I'll not abort,
my only reason to head for high ground
is from those who would drag me down.

I already know they could care less
to put aside evil, live on stress,
making lives miserable to those who'd hear,
while I'd rather cast about cheer.

So join me, friend, while we give of ourselves
like jolly little friendly elves,
and you will join me on my road
as well as Passions' members in this abode.

**

Pepper, you are the one with whom I'll meet
as I gather strangers on the street
to take them to you, who will cheer them on
as we move to high ground, dusk or dawn.

It's not that I'm better, I've far to go,
it's just at this time in my life, it's so;
I'd rather do good, and right, for I've seen
the dark side and trust me, there is no sheen.

As many here, leaders they are, all,
and from good, sometimes I'd fall,
but my life is in my hands, it's true,
so I'll take the high ground, to be with you.

That was beautiful, Sunshine.  It takes that strength of commitment to elevate others, rather than being brought down into their darkness.  We can all wallow in the depths of despair, crying on each others shoulders, but it takes one like you to make the sorrowful look up.

Austrailians have a certain way
To talk about a trip away
They say, when they are full of doubt
It's time to take a "walkabout".

At times, in order not to grieve,
It's best to pack one's bags and leave
When ears are full of others' shouts
It's time to take a walkabout.

Some simple temporary jaunt
To where harrassment doesn't haunt
Where misery is not allowed
And folks are kind and stand up proud.

So, rather than endure the few
Who fills one's life with ballyhoo,
There is no need to frown and pout
When you can simply walkabout.

When things come on to bring us down
It's time to smile and look around,
Say, "Sorry, folks, I'm stepping out.
It's time to take a walkabout".

AMEN to your poem, Sunshine.

No one has enjoyed the responses more than I - and Balladeer, I am delighted beyond measure that you would take the time to compose such a delightful ditty.  I am not unfamiliar with the term walkabout, but indeed did not know the true meaning behind the words.

Thank you everyone, for letting me know your thoughts on this piece.
