Remembrance
(Dedicated to Laurel)

I awoke last night,
thinking I felt your movements,
and as my hand
traced
lazily down my abdomen;
I remembered you were gone.

The flatness of my belly
suddenly felt so foreign;
and the memory of you
caused my breasts to weep
in tears of milk.

I reached to clasp the tiny box,
containing a foot print card
and a lock of your hair,
with the same hands
that only days before
shook
as they touched your perfect face.

You were born in silence ~
and something inside me died.

 "I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I've led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me , this has always been enough." ~Nicholas Sparks from The Notebook

I'm sorry, I should have explained this one. It was written for my neice who lost a baby 2 days before her due date...a beautiful, perfect little girl named Laurel. I wrote what I thought she would feel, which, seeing this type of loss, was not hard for me to imagine. This would have been her first Christmas.
Thanks Martie, Denise and Whtdove

Hoot, this was written for your niece, but it could have been for any mother, for those haunting thoughts run through all of our minds til we know our child is safe and well. I cried when I read this, and am so sorry for your niece. How heartbreaking.
This poem is so well written.That's what brings the tears

Dark Angel...thank you very much

Elizabeth...yes, I see this on a daily basis and how overjoyed parents are when everything is over and done with and they are holding a healthy baby, but on those times I see the loss...the sadness is overwhelming. Life is so fragile, yet so many take it for granted.

I weep too Ruth....for your niece, for myself and for every mother who has felt this devastating loss...
So beautifully written.....

 A soul that writes from the heart and shares it, truly gives a gift extraordinaire!
