I was willing to do anything with Dad
It didn¹t have to be fun
Bust tires apart, change oil, or sit in the car and wait
Go with him on a New York run

I was waiting for him to give me something
Something more important than the teat
But it was something he didn¹t have
For he was never given it

I needed him to praise me
Tell me I was no fool
I was smart
I had a way with a tool

But a man can¹t give
What he was never given
Old Grandpap was a tyrant
Hard work was his living

So I always waited
Waited till Dad died
Until his heart was done pumping
Till he no longer syed

Now I try to remember what I wanted
I try to remember to praise my boy
I dont want him to wait
For someone else to give him that joy

What a good moral to this story! I liked it.. sort of like the song "Cat's Cradle".

You're so right... This poem hits home with me... so many of our fathers weren't given those abilities... I had to realize that before I could forgive mine for contributing so little when I was young.... Nice work on this one...

This hit home for me, it did. There is an important message here. Nicely done, Tom.

The lessons learned from our childhood experiences can enrich the lives of our children if we are wise. Nice poem, Tom.

Amen to this!  I have 2 small boys, and I try to spend as much time with them as I can...and you're right, it doesn't have to be much, they just like doing ANYTHING together!  Even washing dishes!  I always feel guilty if I get wrapped up in what I have to do....I try to put work off, and spend more time with them....it's hard sometimes.  Thank you for sharing such a powerful message....May it not fall on deaf ears.
