MUSICAL MEMORIES Discernment, like a wine, matures as years go rolling by, Reflected in the mirror of the music that we buy. But ever we remember that which echoed in our youth Those favourite songs we oft recall, of life and love and truth. Do the memories come flooding when you hear a Beach Boys number? Can the golden voice of Jim Reeves stir those past thoughts from their slumber? Does the memory of Roy Orbison still linger on your mind? Yet the lyrics of Bob Dylan never leave the past behind. Did you ever dance the night away to Rod’s dramatic tones? Or take a friend to see a concert by the Rolling Stones? And back in ‘74, did your appreciation heighten When Abba first sang “Waterloo” upon the stage in Brighton? But now that time has washed us down its ever rolling stream, And re-defined our preference a little more serene; Despite nostalgia’s journey, which we take in mood reflective, The chances are our current trends are somewhat more selective. Does the voice of Pavarotti with your inner spirit mingle? At the close of “Nessun Dorma” does your spine begin to tingle? Do you empathise with Elton, and his “Candle” for Diana? Or can “Someone saved my life tonight” evoke you in like manner? Do the pipes of Scotland stir you, reaching deep down in your soul? Or the strings of Mantovani, or the voice of Nat “King” Cole? What of lovely Sarah Brightman, with her pitch so crystal clear, Harmonising (with Bocelli) at the peak of her career. Have you listened to the moving “Words”? - If you’re a Bee Gees fan Then you’ll thrill to Robin’s haunting anthem of the Isle of Man. When the summer day is over, and its busy cares how flown, Then relax with John McDermott, and you’ll never feel alone. There can be few among us, be we husbands, be we wives, Who stand untouched, in whole or part, by music in our lives. In truth, it is the food of love and keeps the spirit younger; Play on, musicians! - feed us well, that none shall ever hunger. © Rod Walford 1999 |

Simply stunning - I am an avowed fan and you bring out the poetic patriot in me!  Personally there is one piece of music by Enya which just gets me - can't remember the name right now, but I'll tell you when I can! |

Now THIS is perfection! Grew up listening to everything from Iron Butterfly to Elvis to Patsy Cline...on up through the Bee Gees, Elton John, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson, Etta James, Reba McEntire and now Edwin McCain and Shannon Curfman ( I highly recommend these newcomers!) An endless list. I LOVE MUSIC!  And of course everyone knows I am a huge fan of the Three Tenors, Bocelli, and Brightman! Rod this one gets printed out for sure! A little musical masterpiece it is! Hi there, this is such a wonderful (and may i add, humourous) poem... I love music myself, its part of my world and life...and without it, i cannot bear to imagine how it would be. Nice theme for a poem, sir... |

Music soothes the savage beast they say. I'm one who listens to WAIT am radio...all the oldies. Your extremely well written poem is sure to evoke memories for anyone over 18. |

Yes! Avid music lover...musician, artist...yep! Wonderful poem, Rod! I love ALL music as well (at least a smidgen of each) and I can relate to this more than I could possibly express in mere written words. It's lovely to see that there are so many more out there who share my passion!!!   |
